Our young changemaker, Manav Tejani, found time to chat with us before moving abroad to pursue his undergraduate studies in Computer Science. Let’s see what he has to share with us about his experience with TribesforGOOD.

How did you benefit from the programme?

I benefitted from TribesforGOOD’s Summer Programme for High School students by gaining real world-experience. Their program is one of the best organised and structured community service programs there is. Pursuing it helped me boast my CV. I was able to talk about it in my college applications and was also able to co-find an organisation, namely, one million women in STEM using the knowledge I gained from the young changemakers program.

What did you learn during the programme?

We had a mix of theory classes and hands-on experience. We learn about real life problems such as financial and digital illiteracy that affected people from underprivileged backgrounds.

How much hands-on experience did you gain during the programme?

Due to COVID-19 we were not physically present when training people from slums. However, we gained hands-on experience by training them over video call about financial and digital literacy. There was a mix of both theory and practical learning and we had more practical learning. We communicated directly with the target audience to create change. Engaging in virtual community service helped me understand the different ways and means through which community service can be delivered.

What kind of projects were you involved in?

Teaching the underprivileged about financial and digital literacy.

How did you co-find an organisation at such a young age?

After attending the TFG program, I was inspired to do something more for the society. Upon completion of the programme, I was confident that I can truly create change. This motivated me to find One Million Women in STEM using the skills that I learnt through the young changemakers programme, such as team-working and problem-solving. One Million Women in STEM seeks to empower women and encourage them to take-up STEM subjects.

Would you recommend this programme to a friend?

I already have! Because I believe that the young changemakers program is a good volunteering program for those interested in social work.
I would recommend this program to anyone who is willing to engage with community service, wants to help the society or is curious about social entrepreneurship. I have also suggested my friends who are going abroad to attend this program to boost their CV.

What kind of skills did Manav gain from this course?

I greatly developed my ability to communicate effectively, solve real life problems and the ability to work in a team. These are also skills that I highlighted when I applied to
